"Rant"

Chuck Palahniuk

By Jason Velarde Michaud

Chuck Palahniuk has to be one of the weirdest most out of the ordinary writers of our time, I mean, is like you start Reading the book thinking you are going to find a square written book, like everything you’ve read before, but then you start the first chapter and you find out that is somehow different, but by the time you are in the middle of the book, and you’ve read the words vomit, prostitute, party crashers, time travel, rabies, and you’re hole conception of not only the book, but also the autor is changed.

The story is somewhat of a biography, as told by everyone except the person being talked about. That person is Buster "Rant" Casey.

First of all you should know that the word rant is used as a double-meaning word here, not only does it mean speaking a lot or violently, but rant is also used as the sound that people make when they vomit, this is a nickname that he earned by making a prank as a kid.

The novel takes place in a near future, or at least I think so, some sort of paralel universe, is only a matter of time into the reading that you believe you are on drugs, or Palahniuk was on drugs, or someone must have been on drugs. I dont know how to qualify the novel, like Scyfy, or surreal, or maybe just a pure contemporary oral biography.

Buster is a kid in Middleton, a town "four solid days of driving" away from anywhere, buster becomes known in his town, doing pranks such as changing the fake body parts put as decoration in haloween for real ones. He has a weird sense of humor, and he likes to be bitten, by all kind of animals, in fact he gets a boner from it, this leaves him with a weird kind of rabies he carries around.

The town actually ends up paying him and giving him an early diploma just to get the hell out of there, and so he goes to the big city where he mixed with the nighttimers and their way of life, going out once or twice a week, simulating accidents, party crashing and stuff like that.

There, he becomes the spreader of what becomes a national infection of rabies.

The following is as weird as buster himself: he straps a christmas tree on the top of his car, sets it on fire and drives off a bridge.

When they open the car door, his body is missing, so from that speculations are made about what happened to him, time travel, incestuous relationships etc.

If you like unexpected situations, weird senses of humor and just laughing, this is a must read book.

Friends, relatives, traffic reports, doctors and all sort of people come together to form this hilarious, exciting, weird, stoned novel.
